I went to school in New York and had to deal with the same issues. If they try and punish you, take it to the teachers boss. If someone says something potentially embarrassing, offer to delete immediately. If you 'DO' record meetings, the recorder should be in plain sight, and you will need to remind people that they are being recorded. If they still say no, give them the info you learned from the counselor and continue doing what your were doing. Recording without the permission of others is not only unethical, but in many places illegal. Answer (1 of 12): Very occasionally, a student asked if they could record my lectures. Then go to the teacher in private and explain why the recordings help and what you can do to set their minds at ease. Just ask for facts and help, and maybe so kind of document (from them) that you can show the teacher that it is okay. Many people with disabilities (like myself) use these audio recordings and there is no reason they couldn't allow every student access. Tell them you learn better this way and have had issues with the teacher and ask them for input. Whether or not they expressly state that they do, go and see someone that handles disabilities or a counselor at your school and ask them. For normal lectures at least it doesnt seem like it would make sense to have the students participate by voice anyway. ![]() During my last semester, I started using recorded(by the University) lectures for exam preparation and found this way to be way more effective (in terms of marks obtained in exams) and time efficient as compared to actually attending the lecture. At my uni the professor either just films himself doing the lecture and it isnt interactive or they mute and turn of the cameras of the students so they can upload the videos. Universities can also use snippets of popular guest lectures on their own websites in order to showcase their portfolio of educators. ![]() As a matter of fact, it's the people who can't watch the lectures at reasonable times that pay the most. Is it okay for classes not to be recorded Are there any benefits to this Some classes are simply unreasonable to watch if you're back home in another country. Students may not distribute, email or otherwise. Record Lectures allows students and business people to record and file lectures and presentations away into a neatly organized calendar marked by subject (topic). I am a Masters Student and one of those who find it very difficult to concentrate in the class. Any audio recording by students is permitted only for the purposes of private study by the individual student. Similar questions ( privacy/ethical point of view, generic legal point of view) have been asked before but I am looking an answer from a legal standpoint specific to the state of New York. ![]()
